Former Chorley Plumber Strikes Gold at National Tourism Awards

A previously unemployed plumber from Chorley, Lancashire has recently won with the highest achievable award for outstanding customer service for his role as Conference Host Manager at the Best Western Premier Leyland Hotel.

Michael Gore officially became England’s most customer caring individual when he was awarded Gold in the Customer Service category at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2012 during a glittering ceremony on 22nd May at Athena in Leicester’s cultural quarter.

Just three years ago, Michael was finding life tough as a qualified but unemployed plumber in his home town of Chorley, but that all changed when he began working for the Premier Leyland Hotel, part of the Feathers Hotel Group.

Michael worked his way up through the group’s first-class training programme run by the Feathers Academy, which aims to provide exceptional training and opportunities for all 450 employees of the Feathers Hotel Group and inspire them to go as far as they can within the hospitality industry.

After entering the awards, Michael took part in a series of X-Factor-style heats where he competed in Preston and Blackpool followed by the North of England semi-final and culminating in him winning the highest accolade in tourism, VisitEngland’s prestigious Gold award.

“I was speechless when my name was read out from a list of nominees from the very best hotels and restaurants across England,” said Michael. “It has been an incredible journey from burst pipes and a lack of work only a few years ago, to being crowned top customer care individual in England in 2012.

“This is very much thanks to my colleagues at the Best Western Leyland Hotel, and of course our hotel owners, The Feathers Hotel Group, who have transformed me as an individual through their Academy of Training and giving me a great new career in the hotel industry.”

Stuart Hunter, Managing Director of the Feathers Hotel Group, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for Michael as he has worked hard since he joined us and has committed himself to every training opportunity.

“It just goes to show that despite these difficulty economic times, our industry has so much to offer in relation to personal development and career progression.”

The Best Western Leyland Hotel is a Premier 4-star hotel just off junction 28 of the M6, and offering a perfect location for meetings and conferences in the North West and a great base for relaxing and visiting the surrounding areas of Liverpool, Manchester, Preston and Southport.
